BELT/RANK TESTING INFORMATION

I.        Annual Testing for Belt/Rank at Main School

The Japan Karate-do Genbu-kai of Pittsburg, Kansas has regularly scheduled belt/rank tests at the
end of the months of January, April, July and October. Actual test dates will be posted. Individuals
testing for their first rank/belt may be tested early dependent on the recommendation of the chief
instructor.

II.      PSU Karate Belt testing

The PSU class will have a once per semester test during the last two weeks of class. Times will be
posted at least 1 week before test day.   Everybody will be required to test.  If you wanting actually
rank in Shito Ryu Genbu Kai you will have to pay the testing fee. If you are taking the test to only
complete the class there will be no charge
.

III.         Testing Criteria

Testing measures your knowledge and level of technical proficiency of karate. It is intended as an
evaluation of your progress and knowledge. It is not intended to identify whether an individual does
"good or bad" karate.

Each test will evaluate your knowledge and proficiency in kihon (basics), kata and kumite. It also
evaluates your manners, attitude and respect for others and yourself

Testing evaluates the technical correctness of stances, blocks, kicks and strikes as well as speed,
power, focus, balance, kiai, rhythm, concentration, direction, spirit, coordination, movement and
control.

Typical testing time standards are:

9th kyu test                  Six to eight weeks
8th,7th kyu test            Minimum of three months between each test
6th,5th,4th kyu test      Recommend six months between each test. Three months in some exceptions
3rd,2nd,1st kyu test     Recommended six months between each test
Shodan                        Recommend nine months to one year preparation.

All shodan (black belt) and higher tests will be conducted by Demura Sensei.
PSU Belt Testing
